An Introduction to Wine

With over 70 wines available by the glass, and a list that spans from £35 to £18,000 it’s clear we know a thing or two about wine here at Berners Tavern.

Our Director of Wine, Matteo Montone,  achieved his Advanced Court of the Master Sommelier this year, so we thought it would be great to share some of his knowledge with you. That’s why we’re launching a series of informal introductions to wine (for beginners). These classes will teach you the basics of wine tasting, the correct terminology to use and ultimately equip you with the skills to approach a wine list with confidence.

Spaces cost £30 per person and the evening runs from 6.30pm to 8pm. If you decide to dine with us at Berners Tavern after the class, you’ll receive 15% off your total bill. Classes are limited to 12 guests, so email us  to book your space.

Meet the Team

Phil Carmichael
EXECUTIVE HEAD CHEF

In 2002, Phil first met Jason Atherton and worked alongside him on the launch of Gordon Ramsay’s Maze, playing an integral role in the restaurant’s opening. Quickly becoming Jason’s right hand man, he headed up the kitchens at Maze South Africa and Prague, where he won his first Michelin star, one of his career highlights.

Nicolas Jean
GENERAL MANAGER

Nicolas started his career at a small Michelin star restaurant in Burgundy, then moved to a high turnover restaurant between the French Alps and Corsica.
Once in London, his career progressed towards the perfect execution of the “art de la table“. He joined Berners Tavern in 2015 and advanced quickly to General Manager.

William Rogers
RESTAURANT MANAGER

William began his career at the Oxford Brookes School of Hospitality Management, then rose through the ranks on the D&D Graduate Scheme before joining the Berners Tavern team in 2017.
The highlight of his career was being named "Rising Star" at the Oxford Brookes Bacchus Alumni Awards in April 2018.

Matteo Montone
DIRECTOR OF WINE

Matteo joined Berners Tavern as Head Sommelier in April 2017, after roles in notable restaurants such as Assistant Head Sommelier at Locanda Locatelli and Deputy Head Sommelier at The Ritz London. He came 3rd in Chaîne des Rôtisseurs 2018 and is currently a finalist in the UK Taittinger Sommelier of the Year.

Michael Onabanjo
MAÎTRE D'

Michael joined the team at Berners Tavern in 2017, but is also a classically trained opera singer. After moving into hospitality, he worked at venues for the Soho House Group, but the highlight of his career to date was working with Tiny Leaf, a zero waste project - a topic that he remains very passionate about.

Andrei Poptelecan
Head Chef

Andrei began his career in Europe, specifically Romania and various Greek Islands before joining the team at Berners Tavern as 2014 as Demi Chef - then rising the ranks to Head Chef.
